If you have a smartphone or a basic digital camera with a wide-angle lens, you will be limited to photographing the Moon as part of your composition. Either way, the process of photographing the Moon starts with your choice of camera gear – although shooting technique and post-processing are just as important. In this article, we explain everything you need to know about Moon photography, from start to finish. When you leave the museum, head out to the nearby High Line or the newly opened Little Island for a whimsical escape to New York’s verdant sanctuaries.

From sprawling Sheep Meadow to the tranquil waters of the Reservoir, this quintessential New York landmark offers photographers myriad opportunities to capture stunning images. Rising elegantly amidst the garden’s myriad foliage, the Enid A Haupt Conservatory houses a year-round array of tropical plants and is famous for its annual springtime orchid show.

The best point-and-shoot cameras can range anywhere from a measly $100 to over $1,000 if you want a compact with advanced features, a decent sensor, and an excellent lens. If you’re planning to create real work with it, expect to spend close to $1,000. But if you just want something to mess around with, go cheap. She is an author of three books which are outlining ways to use your camera for painterly effect.

To help narrow down your options, always go for the ones that fit your speciality. So don’t enter a wildlife photography contest if your expertise lies in portraiture. When you have the camera set to spot metering, you can overexpose the background to blow out the light, while exposing for the subject in the foreground. This can produce a very cool effect and it’s about the only interesting white/light background that I like to use.

Try zooming

If you have a remote shutter release cable or device, then a timer is not necessary, but I would still turn Exposure Delay on to prevent mirror slap from potentially causing camera shake. If you shoot with a very long lens, you should totally read my advanced article on how to stabilize your tripod. Trust me, you will need every tool in your arsenal to make a blur-free image of the moon at focal lengths above 300mm, especially if you have a shaky tripod or unstable tripod head. The only thing to keep in mind, is that teleconverters negatively impact lens sharpness and decrease its maximum aperture. For example, if you mount a 1.4x teleconverter to the Nikon 300mm f/4 PF lens, it will essentially become a 420mm f/5.6 lens. Due to significant loss of sharpness when using 2.0x teleconverters, I recommend against their use for moon photography.
